West Virginia is a US state located in the American South, with its capital at Charleston. West Virginia was formed in 1861 after seceding from Virginia at the start of the American Civil War, with West Virginians refusing to join the Confederate States of America. On 20 June 1863, West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state, and it was the first state to secede from another state since Maine's secession from Massachusetts. The state is known for its logging and coal mining industries, and the state had a population of 1,844,128, most of whom were working-class; West Virginia had the second-lowest household income in America.
