West Francia

West Francia was the western part of the Frankish Empire, existing from 843 to 987. The kingdom was ruled by the Franks during its existence, with the Carolingians and Capetians both ruling over the kingdom in the 10th century, being formed by Louis the Pious after the partition of the kingdom at Verdun in 843. The region included most of France, although Lorraine, Burgundy, Alsace, and Provence were not included in the kingdom. The capital of West Francia was Paris, and West Francia would transform into the Kingdom of France in 987 with the death of Louis V of France and the accession of Hugh Capet and the House of Capet to the throne.
