West Florida

West Florida was a province of Spain from 1763 to 1821, located on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico in what is now the panhandle of Florida and parts of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. Great Britain was in control of West Florida, with its capital at Pensacola, from the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, incorporating parts of occupied Spanish Florida and French Louisiana into the small region. After the American Revolutionary War, West Florida and East Florida were returned to Spain by the British, but border disputes with the United States after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 would lead to further conflict. In 1810, settlers in the region proclaimed the Republic of West Florida, which was subsequently annexed into the USA. In 1819, the rest of Florida was purchased by the USA in the Adams-Onis Treaty, ending the controversy.
