The West Country is a region of southwestern England, including the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Isles of Scilly, and Bristol. The West Country is a mostly rural region, with tin mining and fishery being traditional industries. The ports of Bristol, Penzance, Plymouth, Weymouth, and Bournemouth are located in the West Country; many pirates came from the region due to its importance to seafaring, trade, and fishing. The region has its own dialect and accent, with the rhotic accent making the West Country English dialect sound very similar to Irish.
