Wayne Turner

Wayne Turner (died December 1864) was a Confederate States Army captain who served as the commandant of Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia during the American Civil War. The cruel Turner was known to humiliate prisoners, whom he deemed to be worth less than dirt, and to torture them; unsanitary conditions led to several deaths among Union Army prisoners of war. In 1864, he tortured Union general George Hazard after John S. Mosby handed him over to Libby Prison, but Hazard's friend Orry Main and Orry's cousin Charles Main discovered Hazard's perilous condition from pro-Southern friends of Hazard's mother. They promptly visited the prison with forged orders demanding Hazard's release, but Turner said that he did not recognize the name of the general mentioned in the orders and said that he would only release Hazard over his dead body. The Main cousins were forced to fight Turner, and Charles threw Turner against his own knife, killing him.
