Wayne Mixson

Wayne Mixson (16 June 1922-8 July 2020) was the Democratic Governor of Florida from 3 to 6 January 1987, succeeding Bob Graham and preceding Bob Martinez.

Biography[]

Wayne Mixson was born in New Brockton, Alabama in 1922, and he served in the US Navy during World War II before attending college in Florida and rising through the ranks of the American Farm Bureau Federation. He served in the State House from 1967 to 1972, in the State Senate from 1972 to 1978, as Lieutenant Governor from 1979 to 1987, and as Governor for three days in 1987 after Governor Bob Graham took his seat in the US Senate. He became a Republican in 2012, having endorsed several GOP candidates starting in the 1990s. He died in Tallahassee in 2020.
