London Waterloo Station is a major rail terminus in the Waterloo neighborhood of Lambeth, London, England. On 11 July 1848, it opened as a terminus of the London and South Western Railway, and it was named for nearby Waterloo Road and Waterloo Bridge, which were, in turn, named for the great British victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In 1922, a rebuilt London Waterloo opened, replacing the disorganized original station. In 1967, the closure of Waterloo's steam-powered services marked the end of steam-powered train transport in the United Kingdom. In 2007, St. Pancras Station replaced Waterloo as the London terminus for Eurostar international trains. Waterloo became the busiest railway station in the UK, with nearly 100 million entries and exits from the station per year; it also had the largest number of platforms, at 24.
