Orange Street Boston

Washington Street, formerly known as Orange Street, is a street in downtown Boston, Massachusetts that runs from Neponset and Water Street in Walpole, Massachusetts to Court Street in Boston. Colonial Orange Street ran from Newbury Street in the north to the Boston Neck causeway to Roxbury in the south. In 1789, the street was renamed to Washington Street, as George Washington had ridden the Post Road into Boston during his tour of New England that October. In 1824, the name Washington Street was extended to include the roads leading north to Dock Square. Washington Street was later expanded northward to Haymarket Square in 1872, to the Charlestown Bridge in 1901, and to Rhode Island in 1933. The street was originally served by streetcars before the Washington Street Elevated arrived in 1901; it closed in 1987 as the Southwest Corridor opened days later.
