The Washington Navy Yard is a neighborhood on the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, Washington DC. The yard itself was built on 2 October 1799, and it was the oldest shore establishment of the US Navy. By World War II, the Navy Yard was the world's largest naval ordnance plant, but it was phased out in 1961, and the deserted factory buildings were converted into office use after 1964. In 2010, the Navy Yard neighborhood had a population of 2,794 people.
