
Walter Jeremiah Maddock (13 September 1880-25 January 1951) was the Republican Governor of North Dakota from 28 August 1928 to 9 January 1929, succeeding Arthur G. Sorlie and preceding George F. Shafer.
Biography[]
Walter Jeremiah Maddock was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1880, and he cofounded the socialist Nonpartisan League before serving in the state house from 1915 to 1923, as Lieutenant Governor from 1925 to 1928, and as Governor of North Dakota from 1928 to 1929. He strongly supported the state ownership of the state bank and the largest flour mill in the United States; he later joined the Democratic Party and served as head of North Dakota's Farm Security Administration from 1937 to 1950.
