Walter Giffard (1228-April 1279) was the Lord Chancellor of England and Archbishop of York.
Biography[]
Giffard was the Governor of York from 1258 until his death, but only became Archbishop in 1266. Giffard assisted King Henry III of England in the Second Barons' War in the Battle of Evesham, and was given a stipend of 500 marks per year and the title of Lord Chancellor. Giffard was responsible for bringing John de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, to justice for the murder of Alan la Zouche, and died in 1279 in York.
