Wallachia was a principality in Romania that existed from 1330 to 1859, with Bucharest serving as its capital. The principality was founded by Basarab I of Wallachia after a revolt against King Charles I of Hungary, and it accepted the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire in 1417. Wallachia would be a vassal of the Ottomans until 1859, when it united with Moldova to form the United Principalities; in 1866, this new nation renamed itself to "Romania".
