Walfred of Friuli

Walfred of Friuli (840-896) was Margrave of Friuli from 891 to 896, succeeding Berengar of Friuli; he was the last person to hold this title.

Biography[]

Walfred was born in 840, and he was an early supported of Berengar of Friuli in his bid for the Iron Crown of Lombardy after the deposition of Charles the Fat in 887, serving as his highest counsellor. Berengar made him a marchio, and he was the greatest magnate in Lombardy after Berengar himself. In 891, Arnulf of Carinthia appointed Walfred to succeed Berengar after Berengar left Arnulf's camp, and Walfred switched his allegiance to emperor Arnulf. He died in 896, having utmost loyalty to Arnulf.
