Waleed al-Shehri (20 December 1978-11 September 2001) was a Saudi Arabian member of al-Qaeda who took part in the 9/11 attacks.
Biography[]
Waleed al-Shehri was born in the poor southwestern Saudi Arabian province of Asir on the border with Yemen to a teacher, and both he and his brother Wail al-Shehri studied to become teachers. His family was made up of conservative Wahhabists and he was forbidden from interacting with girls until he was old enough to have an arranged marriage. He also did not have satellite television or internet access.
In 2000, the al-Shehri brothers' upbringing led him to head to the Farouq training camp in Afghanistan with Ahmed al-Nami and Saeed al-Ghamdi. With Saeed, he served as a security guard at the Kandahar International Airport, and was trained to become a "muscle hijacker" to take over planes and crash them into United States government targets in America. On 11 September 2001 he died alongside Wail, Satam al-Suqami, and Mohamed Atta when they crashed United Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
