Waino Hendrickson

Waino Edward Hendrickson (18 June 1896-22 June 1983) was the Republican Governor of the Alaska Territory from 3 January to 8 April 1957 (succeeding B. Frank Heintzleman and preceding Mike Stepovich) and from 9 August 1958 to 3 January 1959 (succeeding Stepovich and preceding the first Governor of Alaska, William A. Egan).

Biography[]

Waino Edward Hendrickson was born in Juneau, Alaska Territory, United States in 1896, the son of Finnish immigrant parents. He entered politics in 1946, when he was elected Mayor of Juneau; he served from 1946 to 1953. He was appointed Secretary of Alaska in 1953, and he served as acting governor from January to April 1957 and from 1958 to 1959, when Alaska acquired statehood. He died in Anchorage in 1983.
