The Wafd Party was a national liberal political party in Egypt that existed from 1919 to 1952. The party advocated nationalism, and it was popular from the end of World War I until the 1930s; the party advocated for the termination of British rule and Egypt, and it achieved a major success when Britain nominally exited from the country in 1922. However, the Wafd government's inability to resolve labor disputes led to the Wafd Party losing its once-widespread popularity, and it placed very low emphasis on recruiting and mobilizing the youth. In 1936, it agreed to suport British rule, leading to many nationalists abandoning the party. It remained strong as the party of the pro-British, monarchist establishment until its overthrow during the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. The New Wafd Party was its informal successor.
