Vyacheslav Kebich

Vyacheslav Frantsevich Kebich (10 June 1936-9 December 2020) was Prime Minister of Belarus from 19 September 1991 to 21 July 1994, preceding Mikhail Chigir. He was the first Prime Minister of Belarus after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Biography[]

Vyacheslav Frantsevich Kebich was born in Wolozyn, Poland on 10 June 1936, and he worked as an engineer before becoming a politician. He became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and he headed the government of the Byelorussian SSR from 1990 until its termination in 1991 with the Dissolution of the Soviet Union. In 1991, he became Prime Minister of Belarus, and he promoted a pro-Russian stance, campaigning for a monetary union and supporting the cultural bonds between the two countries. In 1994, after leaving the premiership, he was defeated by Alexander Lukashenko by a wide margin in the presidential election. He died of COVID-19 in 2020 at the age of 84.
