The Volsci were an Italic tribe which inhabited the south of Latium in central Italy during the 6th century BC. The Volsci were rivals of the Romans for several hundred years, starting with their warrior queen Camilla, who fought alongside the Rutuli king Turnus against Aeneas' Trojans in 1233 BC before being slain in battle. The Etruscan king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus went to war with the Volsci during the 6th century BC, and the Volsci remained enemies of Rome even after it overthrew Etruscan rule and created the Roman Republic in 509 BC. The Volscian town of Corioli fell in 493 BC, and they were taken over and assimilated by the growing republic by 300 BC.
