Volhynia is a region of western Ukraine, eastern Poland, and southern Belarus. Also called Lodomeria, Volhynia used to be a part of Poland under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Polish Second Republic, but the Soviet Union annexed it to the Ukrainian SSR in 1945, and Volhynia would eventually become a part of Ukraine upon its independence in 1991 after the fall of the USSR.
