
Vo Chi Cong (7 August 1912-8 September 2011) was Chairman of the Council of State of Vietnam from 18 June 1987 to 22 September 1992, succeeding Truong Chinh and preceding Le Duc Anh.
Biography[]
Vo Chi Cong was born in Quang Nam Province, French Indochina in 1912. He became a nationalist in 1930 and joined the Indochinese Communist Party in 1935, fighting against Vichy France during World War II and joining the ICP Central Committee in 1941. From 1942 to 1945, he was imprisoned by the French colonial authorities, and he returned to communist politics, becoming a member of the Workers' Party of Vietnam Central Committee in 1960. In 1961, he became Deputy Chairman of the National Liberation Front in South Vietnam, and he played a key role in the Viet Cong movement during the Vietnam War. In 1976, he was awarded a seat on the CPV Politburo, and he served as Fisheries Minister from 1976 to 1977, Agriculture Minister from 1977 to 1978, Deputy Prime Minister from 1976 to 1982, and Chairman of the Council of State (President) of Vietnam from 1987 to 1992. He died in 2011 at the age of 99, and he was granted a televised state funeral.
