Vitorino Salazar

Vitorino Salazar (1787—1863) was a Portuguese admiral and former priest of the Roman Catholic Church. He was known for his mercilessness in battle and was a skilled commander, becoming appointed the chief of the Portuguese Navy in 1860, replacing Admiral Rodrigo de Noronha, Count of Noronha. Salazar was replaced by Admiral Mário Megalhães in 1863 and went on to serve as the Captain General of the Azores for several months before suddenly dying from illness the same year.
