Biography[]

Vitelli in 1499
Vitellozzo Vitelli was born in Tuscany in the present-day Province of Arezzo region of northern Italy, and he fought for the Republic of Florence against Pisa early in his mercenary career. In 1496 he fought for France in Apulia, and allied with the House of Orsini against Pope Alexander VI and the House of Borgia.
Vitelli later served under the Borgias after the Orsinis made peace with them in 1500, but was angry at the execution of his brother Paolo Vitelli in 1499 after he was suspected of being treacherous to Florence. In 1501 he captured the city and he seized Arezzo while his master Cesare Borgia made talks with Florence. However, the Papal States and France forced him to return the city to Florence, and Vitelli began to aspire for independent rule.
The La Magione Conspiracy of 1502 was mounted by Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, and the Orsini family to bring down the Borgias. However, French aid for the Borgias forced the plot to end. Vitelli and Da Fermo attempted to please Cesare by capturing Arezzo, but the two were both strangled together by Micheletto Corella in return for their treason.
