Violet Crawley, Countess of Grantham

Violet Crawley, Countess of Grantham (1842-1928) was a British aristocrat and Countess of Grantham.

Biography[]

Violet Crawley was born in 1842, the daughter of an English baronet. She came from a family of impoverished aristocrats, and, when she married the Earl of Grantham during the 1850s, she brought little more than her upper-class blood into the family. She produced a son and heir, Robert Crawley, as well as a daughter, Rosamund. Her children married into money rather than nobility, and the Countess was initially opposed to Robert's marriage to an American heiress, Cora Levinson, in 1889. She remained the matriarch of the Crawley family as Dowager Countess following her husband's death, and she lived to see the births of three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren before she died in 1928.
