Vineland

Vineland is a city in Cumberland County, New Jersey, formed in 1952. The founders of the city planned to use the surrounding farmland to grow grapes, and Vineland became known as a quiet agricultural area; Welch's was founded in Vineland Borough in 1869, eight years after Vineland Borough was founded. During the late 20th century, however, the urban center of Vineland became known for its high crime rates, with gangs such as the Delsea Posse and Uptown Block Boyz gangs engaging in drug dealing and shootings. Vineland also became known for its high rates of teenage pregnancies due to the small number of entertainment venues or recreational outlets for youths. A diverse city with a large Hispanic population, Vineland became a Democratic stronghold within the largely Republican region of South Jersey. In 2010, Vineland had a population of 60,724 people.
