Victor Jean Baptiste Girardey (26 June 1837-16 August 1864) was a Brigadier-General of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Biography[]
Victor Girardey was born in Lauw, France in 1837, and his family emigrated to Georgia, United States in 1842. Girardey was educated in New Orleans, Louisiana, marrying a local woman of French descent. In 1861, having served in the state militia, he was promoted to be Brigadier-General Albert G. Blanchard's chief-of-staff, and he fought in several battles in northern Virginia as a regimental commander of the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1864. In 1864, he was promoted to Captain, and he took over Ambrose R. Wright's brigade during the Petersburg campaign. On 16 August 1864, he was shot in the head and killed at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom.
