
Vicente del Cano (1540-1585) was an explorer of the Spanish Empire.
Biography[]
Vicente del Cano was born in Salamanca, Spain in 1540 to a military family, and he decided to pursue a military career. In 1585, Del Cano arrived in South America and established the settlement of San Felipe de Salamanca, named for Philip the Apostle and Del Cano's home city. However, his colony had a rivalry with the nearby colony of Bradbury, established by England, and he was shot by an English outpost while scouting the new English town.
