Vicente Benavides

Vicente Benavides (1777-23 February 1822) was a Chilean royalist guerrilla during the Chilean War of Independence.

Biography[]

Vicente Benavides was born in Quirihue, Spanish Empire in 1777, and he initially sided with the Chilean patriots during the Chilean War of Independence before defecting to the royalists. He received the aid of many Mapuche chiefs to combat the Chileans and pillage the countryside, and he was known for his cruelty against prisoners and to break faith during truces. Benavides was captured near the end of the war, and he was hanged in Santaigo on 23 February 1822, and his body was mutilated and dismembered, with his head being stuck on a pole.
