The Vermont Republic was a self-proclaimed republic located in the present-day state of Vermont in the United States, established on 15 January 1777. The republic existed until 4 March 1791, when Vermont was admitted to the union as a state; it had previously been considered to be a part of New York. Thomas Chittenden served as its governor from 1778 to 1789 and 1790 to 1791, with Ethan Allen and Seth Warner serving as generals of Vermont during the American Revolutionary War during the struggle for independence from Great Britain.
