Vermont is a US state located in the New England region of the northeast, with its capital at Montpelier. Due to its location among the Green Mountains, Vermont is the second least-populous state in the United States, having a small population of 646,042 people in 2015. The state was known for its snow sports and for being the largest producer of maple syrup in the country, and it was rated the safest state in the country. Along with California, Hawaii, and Texas, Vermont was one of four US states to be former sovereign states, as the Vermont Republic existed at the same time as the American Revolutionary War before being admitted to the union on 4 March 1791 as the 14th state. The state was also the first to abolish slavery, abolishing adult slavery in 1777.
