The two socialist republics of Czechoslovakia (1968-1989)
The Velvet Divorce occurred on 1 January 1993 when Czechoslovakia was dissolved, leading to the separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The "Velvet Divorce" came after years of tensions between the Czech and Slovak peoples, and the two countries would drift apart as the Czech Republic adopted the koruna (crown) as its currency and Slovakia adopted the Euro.
