Velasco (?-1992) was one of Pablo Escobar's top lieutenants in the early 1990s. When he was hanged on a chain in the city of Medellin in 1992, he became the first victim of the Los Pepes paramilitary group.
Biography[]
Velasco was from Medellin, Colombia, and he was recruited into Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel. Velasco was one of his most trusted men during his stay at La Catedral from 1991 to 1992, and it was Velasco who revealed the treachery of Gerardo Moncada and Fernando Galeano when a farmer reported finding millions of dollars stashed on his land by Moncada. Velasco and Blackie both took part in the killing of Moncada, beating him to death. Velasco became one of Escobar's most trusted sicarios alongside Blackie, Gato, and Juan Diego Diaz, and he worked with Escobar's chauffeur Jhon Burgos to smuggle El Leon's money from the airport in Medellin to Escobar's estates.
Downfall[]
One day, the AUC tracked Burgos down to an apartment in Medellin where Velasco was staying, and Don Berna led a raid on the apartment, with Carlos Castano Gil and Fidel Castano Gil taking part in the raid. Velasco was captured by Carlos Castano after being chased by Javier Pena, and Don Berna tortured him. He gave up the names of three of Escobar's accountants as well as the fact that El Leon was arriving at the airport, and Don Berna then had him hanged from a chain in public with a sign saying that Escobar's days were numbered, signed by "Los Pepes".
