Vanessa Hammond was the wife of British civil servant Charles Hammond.
Biography[]
Vanessa Hammond was the daughter of a Sea Lord who worked at the Admiralty under Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, and she was raised in an upper-class family. She married the civil servant Charles Hammond, who was sent to Dublin, Ireland to serve at the office of Under-Secretary Matthew Nathan during the 1910s. Her husband had an affair with his secretary May Lacy behind Vanessa's back, although he quickly concealed the relationship whenever Hammond came to visit him. During the Easter Rising of April 1916, Nathan sent Lacy to stay with his wife at their home to keep her safe, causing awkwardness between the two women; Vanessa was classist and condescending.
