Van Banks DeLashmutt (27 July 1842-4 October 1921) was the Republican Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1888 to 1891, succeeding John Gates and preceding William S. Mason.

Biography[]

Van Banks DeLashmutt was born in Burlington, Iowa in 1842, and his family settled in Polk County, Oregon in 1852. He worked as a printer in Salem, and he later moved to California and served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he settled in Portland, Oregon, and he became a compositor for The Oregonian newspaper and a bank president before serving as the Republican mayor of Portland from 1888 to 1891. Afterwards, he became a miner in Spokane, Washington, where he died in 1921.
