Valley of Olympia

The Valley of Olympia was a valley which constituted the southeastern region of Elis in Ancient Greece. Within the valley lay the sanctuary of Olympia, where the Olympic Games were held, and it was also home to the tomb of Koroibos of Elis, the first Olympic champion (in 776 BC); the ruined tomb of King Oinomaos of Pisatis; and the mountain of Kronion. During the Olympics, and even amid the Peloponnesian War, the Olympic truce protected the residents of the valley from violence, and violators were severely punished.
