Valerio Verbano (25 February 1961-22 February 1980) was an Autonomia Operaia militant who was murdered in 1980 during the Years of Lead.
Biography[]
Valerio Verbano was born in Rome in 1961, the son of Italian Communist Party members. He first became active with the leftist student movements in 1975, during the "Years of Lead", and he became a member of Autonomia Operaia. From 20 April to 22 December 1979, he was sent to prison for attempting to manufacture explosives. Verbano was also thought to have masterminded the murder of MSI member Stefano Cecchetti.
On 22 February 1980, three young men from the neo-fascist Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari group, wearing ski masks, pretended to be Verbano's friends in order to gain entry to his home. The three tied and gagged Verbano's parents before waiting for Verbano to return from school. When he did so, they shot him dead, and his murderers escaped justice.
