Valentine is a city in Nebraska and the seat of Cherry County. It was founded in 1883 as a railroad town, and it was named for congressman Edward K. Valentine. By the 1890s, Valentine had developed into a small livestock town, providing livestock at auction to landowners and rest and refreshment to thirsty cowboys. The rough, raucous, and hard-working town was nicknamed "Mudtown" because it streets, buildings, and most of its residents were rarely clean. Until 1967, Valentine was split between the mountain and central time zones, with the post office in the central of town separating the two zones. In 2018, Valentine had a population of 2,748 people.
