The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization - Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) is a conservative political party in Macedonia that was founded in 1990. The party proclaimed itself as Christian democratic, but its views were more in line with Macedonian nationalism, supporting Macedonian independence from Yugoslavia. The party claimed descent from the early 20th century-era Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization national liberation movement, and it was founded by young Macedonian intellectuals after they rediscovered the old VMRO and Macedonian nationalism. The VMRO-DPMNE claimed that modern Macedonia had roots in the Macedonia of Alexander the Great and Philip II of Macedon, a controversial claim; Greece objected to these claims, as well as the use of the name of "Macedonia", as ancient Macedonia was inhabited by Greeks, not the Slavs who invaded centuries later. The party's base of support was among ethnic Macedonians, but it occasionally formed coalition governments with ethnic minority parties. The party was one of two major parties in Macedonia, the other being the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia. In 2017, the party held 51/120 Macedonian Parliament and 52/80 municipality seats.
