Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India, with Lucknow serving as its capital. The region, once known as the United Provinces during the British Raj, was renamed to "Uttar Pradesh" in 1950. The state borders Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi to the northwest, Uttarakhand and Nepal to the north, Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the southeast. The state is home to the major cities of Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kaushambi, Ballia, Shravasti, Gorakhpor, Chauri Chaura, Kushinagar, Lucknow, Jhansi, Bareilly, Budaun, Meerut, Mathural, Faizabad, and Shajahanpur. In 2011, Uttar Pradesh had a population of 199,812,341, making it the most populous county subdivision in the world.
