Utbah ibn Rabi'ah

Utbah ibn Rabi'ah (died 624) was a prominent leader of the Quraysh at the time of the rise of Islam.

Biography[]

Utbah ibn Rabi'ah was the son of Rabi'ah ibn Abd Shams, and Utbah married Safiya bint Umayyah. His daughter was Hind bint Utbah, who married Abu-Sufyan ibn Affan; his sons were Abu Hudhayfah ibn Utbah and Walid ibn Utbah; and his brother was Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah. In 624, Utbah, Walid, and Shaybah challenged Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, Ali, and Ubaydah ibn al-Harith in a traditional three-champion duel at the Battle of Badr, and Utbah was slain by Hamza in battle.
