Urraca of Leon

Urraca of Leon (April 1079-8 March 1126) was Queen of Leon, Castile, and Galicia from 1109 to 1126, succeeding Alfonso VI of Castile and preceding Alfonso VII of Leon.

Biography[]

Urraca was born in April 1079, the eldest daughter of Alfonso VI of Castile and Constance of Burgundy, as well as the only child to survive childhood. Her brother Sancho Alfonsez was slain at the Battle of Ucles in 1108, leaving Urraca as the only heir to Leon, Castile, and Galicia. Her marriage to Raymond of Burgundy in led to the House of Ivrea becoming the new ruling dynasty of Spain, as the House of Jimenez's male line went extinct; her son Alfonso VII of Leon would be the first Ivrean ruler. When her husband died in 1105, Alfonso VI sought for her to marry Alfonso I of Aragon, and she decided to reluctantly follow his orders. She eventually divorced him, finding him abusive, and Alfonso allied with the County of Portugal against him. Urraca died in 1126, and her son succeeded her.
