Location of Upper Silesia in the German Empire
Upper Silesia is the southeastern part of the Silesia region of southern Poland, with Oppeln (Opole) and Kattowitz (Katowice) serving as major cities in the region. Prussia once owned Upper Silesia as a part of the German Empire, and in 1945 it was returned to the Polish People's Republic following the end of World War II and the relocation of Poland's borders to the Oder-Neisse Line.
