1956 election

The United States presidential election, 1956 was held on 6 November 1956. The election was a rematch of 1952, with the incumbent Republican Party president Dwight D. Eisenhower and his running mate Richard Nixon facing off against Democratic Party nominee Adlai Stevenson II and his running mate Estes Kefauver. The likeable Eisenhower, who had enjoyed popularity in his last term, gained more support due to the growth of the suburbs (typically Republican strongholds), and he maintained the support of white urban southerners and northern Catholics that he had gained from the Democrats four years earlier. Stevenson won only in the Solid South, and Eisenhower won the election with 457 electoral votes to Stevenson's 73 votes.
