The United States presidential election, 1852 was held on 2 November 1852. Both the Democratic Party and the US Whig Party nominated war heroes as their candidates; the Democrats ran Mexican-American War general Franklin Pierce with William R. King as his running mate, while the Whigs ran War of 1812 and Mexican-American War hero Winfield Scott with William A. Graham as his running mate. The two sides did not have clearly differing views or candidates, so the voters instead focused on the personalities of both candidates. The dark horse Pierce won the election in a landslide, winning 254 electoral votes to Scott's 42.
