The United States of the Ionian Islands was a state and protectorate of the United Kingdom between 1815 and 1864, with Corfu serving as its capital. The republic was established in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, during which the British occupied the pro-French Septinsular Republic on the Ionian Islands and created a new protectorate. The islands were placed under British military administration, while the Austrian Empire was guaranteed commercial status equal to Britain. On 29 March 1864, the islands were united with Greece in order to bolster the reign of King George I of Greece. In 1864, the islands had a population of 236,000 people.
