The United States Secret Service (USSS) is a federal law enforcement agency in the United States, established on 5 July 1865 with the goal of protecting the nation's leaders, the physical White House grounds, and foreign diplomatic missions in the Washington DC area. The legislation creating the agency was coincidentally on President Abraham Lincoln's death the night he was assassinated, althought it was originally created to combat counterfeit currency. In 1977, a Uniformed Division was created as the uniformed police branch of the agency.
