The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) was a socialist and left-wing nationalist party in Venezuela that was founded on 24 March 2007 by Hugo Chavez.

History[]

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela was founded on 24 March 2007 after the socialist Fifth Republic Movement and 23 other parties that supported President Hugo Chavez were ordered to dissolve and unite into a united party. The PSUV led to the fusion of forces that supported Chavez and his "Bolivarian Revolution". That year, it had 5,700,000 members, and it became the ruling party of the country of Venezuela under Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro. Despite being a major socialist party, it had no membership in any international organization, not even Socialist International. The PSUV held onto power despite opposition, and on 6 December 2015 it lost much of its power in parliamentary elections; this did not have an effect on the PSUV's stance in the government, as it had 96/165 National Assembly seats, 20/23 gubernatorial seats, and 242/337 mayoral seats.
