The United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata was a union of provinces in the Rio de la Plata region of South America which existed from 25 May 1810 to 4 January 1831, with Buenos Aires serving as its capital. It emerged during the Argentine War of Independence, and it comprised most of the former Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata dependencies (most of which were in northern Argentina), which were in revolt against Spanish rule during the 1810s and 1820s. At the same time, in 1814, the Argentine Civil War broke out as the conservative Federales and liberal Unitarios clashed over how to govern the country. In 1820, in the Arequito Revolt, the Federales succeeded in ending the centralized government of the United Provinces. From 1825 to 1828, the United Provinces fought the Empire of Brazil in the Cisplatine War, during which they succeeded in liberating Uruguay from the Brazilians, but the civil wars in Argentina would resume, and, on 4 January 1831, the Argentine Confederation was created as a confederation of the federal states of Argentina, replacing the United Provinces.
