The United National Independence Party (UNIP) is a socialist political party in Zambia that was founded in October 1959 by Mainza Chona. Kenneth Kaunda became party leader after he was released from prison a year later, and it governed the country from 1964 to 1991 under Kaunda, being the sole legal party from 1973 to 1990. Upon the restoration of multi-party democracy, UNIP lost the 1991 general elections to the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy and its leader, Frederick Chiluba, and UNIP held no representation in the government after 2008.
