The Unitarios were a liberal political party that existed in Argentina from 1816 to 1862. The Unitarios, meaning "unitarians", supported the establishment of a unitary state with free trade, multiculturalism, and a strong military. The Unitarios were mostly portenos from Buenos Aires Province, and they were opposed to the rural Federales, who sought to oppose Buenos Aires Province's control over the rest of the country. The Unitarios and Federales would fight each other in the Argentine Civil Wars until 1880, and the Unitarios would merge into the Liberal Party of Argentina in 1862.
