The Union Springs shootout occurred in Sabine Parish, Louisiana in 1907 when the outlaw John Marston engaged in a shootout with the US Marshals as they searched for the killer of two Louisiana Raiders and two weapons dealers. Marston had come across an arms deal between Lem D. Sedden and his partner and the Raider Raised O. McCabe and his accomplice, only to shoot a crate of TNT and kill all four participants. A passer-by noticed this and rode off to call the law, so Marston, equipping himself with two pistols, took cover in a wrecked house nearby, climbing through the debris and hiding next to a window. When the Marshals arrived to search for Marston, Marston opened fire with his Model 1899 pistol, initiating a shootout. After the first few lawmen were killed, a larger force was sent in to find Marston with the help of search dogs. Marston proceeded to gun down the next wave of lawmen, and the death of the last Marshal led to the search being called off. In the end, Gains C. Dutro, Jens V. Gesnie, Gaylord G. Rayburn, Alvi B. Ransom, Philando S. Salter, Demetrious N. Brewer, Jacob D. Wallick, Alsup P. Mariane, Harrie F. Munn, and Eric V. McIntire were killed in the shootout, and Marston was left with a $1,365 bounty.
